PHR 320 -- Assignments Spring 2008 |
|
January 14: Read The Great Divorce
January 23: Read The Screwtape Letters
January 30: Question 1 -- Describe, in as much detail as you can, the most important specific characteristics of the Christianity Lewis is urging on us in The Great Divorce and The Screwtape Letters.  : Five or six paragraphs on your website, please.
February 15: Question 2 -- Choose a character from The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and explore her/his symbolic and mythic significance. You need not expect a single coherent meaning to emerge, but rather a certain tension between the character's role in the story and her/his place in the symbolic/Christian meaning structure. That tension is what you should explore. Five or six paragraphs on your website, please. (You should also be nearly done with the Lewis biography.)
March 28: Question 3 -- Choose a character from The Lord of the Rings and explore his/her symbolic and mythic significance (in other words, Question 2 again for a different book). Look particularly for the character's relationship with divine destiny and the moral qualities that allow her or him to fulfill--or fail to fulfill--that destiny. Is that moral strength or weakness traditionally Christian, English, 20th-century, or a mixture of all of these? Six to eight paragraphs on your website.
April 1: I need something on your website about your project: an idea or a full proposal. The projects will be due at the end of the month.
April 30: Final Question -- Lewis and Tolkein wrote in Britain in the middle of the 20th century. How do their writings reflect their time and place? We live in America in the 21st century. Do their ideas "work" for us? Eight to ten paragraphs on your website, with specific examples.
